A laptop being a portable computer, it get its power supply from the rechargeable battery placed inside it. A new battery should be fully charged and discharged 3 to 5 times to realize the battery performance. To conserve power, you should remove your PCMIA modem as they draw power even if they are not being used. The laptop batteries should not be stored under extreme temperature condition or in damp places. Many laptops have power management software to extend battery life or to conserve power when the battery runs low.
Some types of batteries commonly used in laptops are -
- Nickel-Cadmium batteries (NiCad) have a life of about 2 hours between charges. They were the first type of cell to be used on laptops. One main drawback is the risk of explosion if the battery is charged too long.
- Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries have a longer life than NiCad batteries but have a overall shorter chargeable life. These batteries suffer less from memory effect than Nicad batteries.
- Lilon batteries are lighter, thinner, have longer life spans and are now currently used in laptops. These do not suffer from memory effect and do not get heated up if they are overcharged. These batteries have a life of upto 5 hours, depending on the use and can support 950 to 1200 charges.
